I think a lot of us beat ourselves up after devouring treats, enjoying some wine or skipping a workout or two. I’m a huge advocate of healthy eating, consistent workouts, and meditation but there are a few reasons we need to give ourselves a break sometimes, relax and eat! I enjoy having a glass or two on the weekends, and who can resist that warm bread basket at restaurants?! Having a healthy balance is the key, I am not saying to go all out, but it’s ok to have a cupcake!
1. It can lead to a fresh start
I don’t know about you, but after a day or two of indulgent foods and skipped workouts, I feel even more motivated to get back to my usual workouts and up my veggie intake. I usually indulge on weekends and Monday morning, I am so ready for a workout and less of those rich and heavy foods.
2. It can remind you why you typically choose to eat healthy
After a day of indulging eats, I often feel satisfied and happy, along with full and just a little bit lethargic. This always serves as a good reminder of why I live the lifestyle I do. A “once-in-a-while” indulgence day can be a gentle reminder to keep up your typically healthy habits.
3. You are human
Yes, you are a person and you are not made to resist all things sweet and rich.
4. It’s healthy To me, a healthy approach to life means balance. It’s healthy to let yourself indulge once in a while, and to eliminate the guilt I’ve heard from so many people, myself included at times. Note: It’s not healthy to eat 4 pieces of cake and beat yourself up over it. If you are going to do it, at least enjoy it and get over it.
5. Savor the experience once you’ve made a decision to indulge in a certain snack or less-than nutritious entree. You know how to sensibly fit it into your plan and are mindful that it’s about quality, not quantity. Adopting that strategy, there’s nothing else to do other than to relax and enjoy it. Relish each bite and swallow the guilt.
It's absolutely okay to indulge! Life's too short to just cut out the 'bad' things entirely - some of those bad things are entirely too delicious! You're definitely being smart about it by planning ahead and fitting it into your day, so I definitely wouldn't stress about it. Remember, deprivation can lead to overindulgence, so it's best that we enjoy those foods, as long as it's in moderation; balance is part of the best healthy lifestyles.
