The other day I was at a coffee shop when a stranger in passing blurted out, “I like your shoes!” And you know what? I was on cloud nine for the next 15 minutes. My shoes (gray flats if you must know) weren’t earth-shatteringly cool, but this person made an effort to give me a nice compliment and it made my day. I find that many people are the same: they love when their friends, family, and strangers take a quick second to give them heartfelt compliment.
Before we begin I wanted to make one thing straight about what I mean when I talk about compliments and praise. I am referring to true and genuine compliments that come from the heart and are meant for the good, rather than random “compliments” that you give just because everyone else did it. For instance, there are 5-6 girls huddled around the bride and one of the girls say “you look absolutely gorgeous” then other reply saying “yes you do”.
The reason why I do not consider this compliments genuine is because they usually only run surface deep, I’m not saying it’s bad to give these types of compliments. But let’s face it, certain people just agree to not look rude.
It takes confidence and self-esteem to notice good things about others and to make the first caring move to tell them about it .When I first started giving compliments I was awkward and shy about it. I kept wondering if I’d offend them in some way or make people suspicious about what I wanted from them.
I’ve since discovered that a sincere compliment is always a welcome boost to someone’s day. There will be those that reject it or will even argue with you, but that’s usually their problem and not yours. A compliment is like a gift, if someone doesn’t want your gift you’ll still end up owning it. The best way to accept one is also like a gift, just say ‘thank you’.
You’ll also find when you start noticing good things about people; you’ll notice more good things about you too! And the more you do, the more your own self-esteem will grow.
A compliment is a powerful tool in life. Compliments spread sunshine wherever you go. It makes people feel valued and creates a positive environment around you both. Sometimes it can be the only good part of someone’s day. A compliment is a little gift of joy. But the most wonderful thing is that the giver often feels as good as the receiver. What does a compliment cost you? Nothing! What will it get you? Good karma and a warm ‘n fuzzy feeling. So get to complimenting already! The best part? You might get a few in return. It takes a few seconds to make someone’s day a little brighter with a compliment. See something or someone that you like well, tell them! A few little words can go a long way. I believe complimenting someone is easy way to send some good vibes.
At least, that’s my take. How do you feel about compliments? Does it make a difference?
